Slate Roofing
Slate roofing is an old tradition. Ancient slate roofs can be seen in England, Wales, and Scotland. Because slate is difficult to cut (due to tough, unpredictable deposits inside), slate was cut into the very large tiles to cover as much of the lower roof as possible. For the top of the roof, where it would be more difficult to mount large, heavy tiles, smaller tiles were fashioned. This technique for using large tiles at the bottom and small at the top is called the graduated slate roof.
